Vintage Notes

The 2018 Vintage was a classic Washington State Vintage with a mild winter and extremely hot summer. The winter leading to Spring was mild and temperatures in March/April were slightly above average leading to our Estate’s Vineyard bud break in middle April. A warm Spring provided perfect growth for the grapevines. Our meticulous farming practices allowed us to manage vigorous growth throughout the growing season, so the plants reached our crop size yield goals for each block. A hot summer with cool nights during 2018 advanced the ripeness and growth in the vineyards that we have not seen in the last few years providing for an optimal vintage. The hot summer allowed grapes to reach optimal maturity and ripeness levels far exceeding anything we saw in 2017 and 2016. 2018 did see some heavy smoke from wildfires in the Northwest, but the location of our vineyards, the timing of the smoke, and the overall smoke saturation, our vineyard was not affected by the smoke. White grape varietals saw a lot more sun exposure creating bountiful aromatics with balanced acidity. The red grape varietals made wines that are lush with dark fruit aromas and silky tannins. The 2018 Vintage will be one to enjoy for many years to come.

Winemaking Notes

Each element of our 2018 Mustang blend comes from our Estate Vineyard from blocks we have designated as Reserve blocks. We farm each of these blocks differently to ensure a small crop size that will allow the fruit's growth to focus on concentrating flavors and optimal ripeness. Each varietal was then hand-harvested at each varietal optimal maturity and hand-sorted before being sent to small fermenters and concrete fermenters. The portion of Concrete fermentation creates complexity and intriguing layers of minerality in the wines while accentuating fruit aromas. Treating each varietal with delicacy is critical in our program for this wine, we want to make sure we have expressive varietal aromatics but are gentle on the palate. Doing so requires the utmost attention to detail for each lot, we try to get as much extraction as possible early in the fermentation stages before the presence of alcohol is a factor. This gives us ample color and vivid aromatics, then we taper off the extraction to a gentler extraction method to ensure we have a lush and velvet-like texture on the wine. Once each lot was dry on the skins, we free run the wine from the skins and send the skins to the press for gentle pressing to extract the remaining juice. For aging, we chose a variety of sizes of French oak barrels with 25% New French oak large 500L barrels, 30% 2-year-old oak, and 45% neutral French oak. All these elements allow the complex fruit notes in the wine to be the star while creating a nice touch of oak that is balanced in the wine. During the first three months of aging, the wine lees were stirred twice a month to naturally soften the wine and to create more roundness on the palate. Aged for 18 months in oak, then sent back to a concrete tank for three weeks of additional concrete aging before being sent to a Stainless-Steel tank to prepare the wine for bottling.
